Besides Jean Grey and Cyclops, there are few couples who personify the X-Men quite as vividly as Peter Rasputin (aka Colossus) and Kitty Pryde. Although their relationship hasn’t exactly been stable (not like any are in comics), they’re an iconic couple with an extensive past. From their first meeting way back in UNCANNY X-MEN #129 to their heartbreaking reunion in ASTONISHING X-MEN #3, Kitty and Colossus have a long history, full of both good times and bad.

With Kitty only being thirteen when they first met, they’ve matured and changed a lot. Since their wedding is coming up in X-MEN GOLD #30, we wanted to take a look at their relationship, how it’s grown over the decades, and why it’s one of our favorite X-Men pairings.

Is It Really Just a Crush?

Kitty and Colossus’ relationship didn’t develop overnight. For a long time, it was mostly just a crush on Kitty’s end. They technically meet in UNCANNY X-MEN #129, but it isn’t until UNCANNY X-MEN #131 that Kitty begins to show some interest in the Russian mutant after he saves the team from danger.

Kitty’s infatuation with Colossus only grows stronger during the “Days of Future Past” arc. In this arc, future versions of Kitty and Colossus are married. That doesn’t necessarily change anything for the present characters, but it does change the reader’s perspective on the couple. As strange (and inappropriate) as it is for a thirteen-year-old and a presumably eighteen-year-old to be a couple, after “Days of Future Past,” it’s kind of impossible not to think of them as an item — or, at least a future item.

For a while, it seemed like nothing was really going to change between them. The X-Men always treated Kitty like the token kid and because of that, no one took her obvious advances towards Colossus seriously. In UNCANNY X-MEN #143, she gives Colossus a quick peck on the cheek — but it’s more a sign of Kitty’s immaturity than a real show of affection. While they may be “destined” to be together in the future, writer Chris Claremont makes a point of keeping their relationship on a surface level. That is until Kitty turns fourteen.

First Kiss

After Kitty’s fourteenth birthday, Kitty and Colossus’ relationship takes a romantic turn. In UNCANNY X-MEN #165, Kitty wakes from a nightmare and Colossus is there to comfort her. Although they kiss for the first time — and Colossus admits that he does indeed have feelings for Kitty — Colossus wisely reminds her that she’s still too young for the dating life.

But, that doesn’t stop Kitty from trying. Even though she was considerably younger than him, Kitty and Colossus’ relationship continued to grow — up until the SECRET WARS comic event. In MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS, Colossus and the rest of the X-Men mysteriously appear on another planet. While there, Colossus falls for an alien healer, but at the end of the series, the healer sacrifices herself to save Colossus. When the X-Men finally return to Earth, Colossus breaks the news to Kitty. Safe to say, Kitty doesn’t take it very well.

Old Flame

It isn’t until many years later in Joss Whedon and John Cassaday‘s 2004 ASTONISHING X-MEN that Kitty and Colossus’ relationship finds a new spark. In ASTONISHING X-MEN #4, Kitty finds Colossus in an alien bunker — years after he supposedly died. The miracle brings the two together and they quickly form a real relationship. Since Kitty’s presumably a good bit older now, it’s a bit more romantic and a lot less creepy.

After Kitty gets trapped in a giant flying bullet in ASTONISHING X-MEN #24, Colossus is devastated. Fortunately, his sorrow is short-lived; Kitty returns in UNCANNY X-MEN and their romance begins again. But, this time around, Kitty isn’t quite as infatuated. She breaks things off with the metal mutant because of his obsessive need to heroically sacrifice himself. The two stay apart for years until they’re placed on the same team in X-MEN GOLD. By that time, Kitty’s gone through a lot of heartbreak (Bobby Drake, Peter Quill, etc.) and isn’t ready for a relationship. However, over numerous issues, their friendship becomes romantic and in X-MEN GOLD #20, Kitty proposes.

What Makes Kitty and Colossus’ Relationship Work?

Sometimes it seems like everyone has been with everyone in comics. Like any form of fiction, romance is practically a required trait for comic books and sometimes writers take it a little too far (like that unforgivable time the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were a couple in ULTIMATES 3). But, with Kitty and Colossus, I think their relationship has worked a lot better than other comic relationships. Here are a few reasons why.

All These Years

A lot of times, X-Men readers like to focus on the stranger aspects of Kitty and Colossus’ relationship — which are, undeniably, numerous. Kitty was only thirteen when they met and Colossus was (most likely) eighteen. That’s kind of a creepy situation. But, I think we have to remember that their relationship didn’t immediately turn sexual and romantic. For years, it was pretty innocent. Sure, they kissed a couple of times, but they never really “dated” until much later.

Plus, the fact that they’ve known each other for that long is kind of adorable. Kitty’s had a lot of relationships, but she always comes back to her first crush: Colossus. Similarly, Colossus has been through his own share of relationships, but he’s still fiercely devoted to “Katya,” as he lovingly calls her. Because they’ve known each other for so long, it makes their marriage seem like a no-brainer. Of course, they should get married. They’ve had their ups and downs, as any couple does, but they’ve always found a way back to one another.

Opposites Attract

While I don’t know if I would necessarily call Kitty and Colossus complete opposites, they are pretty different personality wise. Colossus is shy, loves to paint, and isn’t much of a talker. In contrast, Kitty is a conversationalist and a natural leader. Compared to the quiet Russian, she’s much more candid and social.

They also have a lot in common, which is probably why they started dating in the first place. But the fact that they balance each other with their different personality traits is what has kept their relationship alive for so long. Kitty has dated more social guys in the past, like Peter Quill, but it’s Colossus she keeps coming back to. I think this is because his quiet, calm demeanor gives her something that those other guys can’t.

Love Works

My favorite thing about Kitty and Colossus’ upcoming marriage isn’t that it feels like a fated, fairytale ending (though sometimes it does). No, what I appreciate most about the famous X-couple is that their relationship didn’t always come easy and frequently required a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

They aren’t a “perfect” couple. They have things about each other that they don’t like. I definitely think Colossus fell in love with that alien healer during SECRET WARS because she was more mature than the still childish Kitty. Likewise, Kitty broke up with Colossus because he always wanted to sacrifice himself before thinking about the consequences.

They have issues, like any couple does, but their relationship always recovers because they’re willing to resolve those issues. Colossus finally realized that, in order to have Kitty, he needed to be more careful with himself. Similarly, Kitty realized that to be with Colossus, she’d have to grow up and take on more responsibility. It’s this ability to learn from mistakes and move past them that I think really defines Kitty and Colossus’ relationship.

Finally Saying I Do

Kitty and Colossus’ relationship in X-MEN GOLD might feel a little rushed for those who don’t know much about the characters’ pasts. In X-MEN GOLD #1, Kitty doesn’t want to be anything more than friends but in #20, she’s proposing? It sounds kind of ridiculous, but after taking a closer look at their relationship, I think it makes sense. Kitty and Colossus are just picking up where they left off, after being together for years. Honestly, they should’ve married a long time ago.
