Marvel announced today that this July will see the release of the all-new ASTONISHING X-MEN #1 by Charles Soule, one of Marvel’s chart-topping writers. Best known for his work on DAREDEVIL, UNCANNY INHUMANS, and SHE-HULK, as well as DEATH OF WOLVERINE and current X-Men event INHUMANS VS. X-MEN, Charles Soule is headlining this new team lead by Old Man Logan, Archangel, Mystique, Rogue, Gambit, Psylocke, and Fantomex. In this iteration of ASTONISHING X-MEN by Charles Soule, Marvel reveals what brings the new team together: “A familiar menace has once again reared its ugly head — reborn, renewed and resurrected. To defeat one of their greatest foes and rescue one of their own, the X-Men’s greatest will assemble for a mission that will take them places you never thought they’d go!”
ASTONISHING X-MEN by Charles Soule will have a unique approach, as explained by Soule:
“The book is designed to tell a very focused, specific story, with a few cool main villains. . . . I’m writing it like a puzzle box, with new layers and reveals opening up every issue. So, you’ll never know exactly where it’s going to go next — but the structure is built in such a way that almost anything from the long, incredible history of the X-Men can pop up. If you think about these characters, they’ve been present or involved for virtually every major era of X history, all the big events. That’ll play a role in a big way.”
A new ASTONISHING X-MEN by Charles Soule? Does life get better than this for X-Men fans?
ASTONISHING X-MEN is perhaps best known for its critically acclaimed 2004 ongoing series by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, which followed Grant Morrison’s NEW X-MEN and featured a similar team. ASTONISHING X-MEN would then be continued by Warren Ellis in 2007, and later Marjorie Liu in 2012. It has been four years since the close of Liu’s run of ASTONISHING X-MEN, and now Charles Soule is reuniting the team with fan-favorite mutants in this revival.
This announcement comes as icing on the cake, as mutant fans are already preparing for the plethora of X-Men titles (like X-MEN BLUE and X-MEN GOLD) coming this spring. What’s curious is that Old Man Logan appears on the cover of X-MEN GOLD as well, so we’re interested to see if he’ll be a figure connecting all of these X-Men groups. Regardless, it’s nice knowing that a writer like Charles Soule will be writing ASTONISHING X-MEN and taking part in this new wave of mutant books, as his recent books have been absolutely stellar.
While Jim Cheung is on cover art duty for the first issue, the artist joining ASTONISHING X-MEN by Charles Soule has yet to be revealed. Look for ASTONISHING X-MEN #1 this July!
