Never has there been a cast of characters like the Hellions. They have consistantly suffered the slings and arrows of a vast amount of writers at their helm and the ever changing Marvel Universe. Their original leader Empath is also the original Julian Keller in many respects. He's Emma Frost's prize pupil, the leader of her squad of mutants, and also has a power relating to the mind. Created by Chris Claremont, Empath's Romeo and Juliet type relationship with Magma of the Hellion's rival, the New Mutants, spared Manny from the fatal confrontation his peers had at the hands of Trevor Fitzroy. A relationship no one saw coming from either side took Magma off the roster of the New Mutants and onto the Hellions. When Magma decided to retire to Nova Roma that's when she brought Empath with her, and we got to see him in a whole new role - vulnerable. Empath confessed that he can't tell if people like him because he might be using his powers, that he has an addiction to manipulating others, and that he has fallen head over heels in love with Magma. After she was hurt, it was Empath who nursed her back to health until they ran into Amara's family in Nova Roma. She introduced Empath as Manuel de le Rocha and her friend. One M-Day later, Magma and Empath had separated after discovering he was using his powers to control her and the people of Nova Roma. It was obvious the void created in Empath's life by Magma's leaving led to his subsequent addiction to Kick and and finally in a position to be manipulated by the Red Queen through eerie saddo-masochistic means. |

This month's mutant is a groundbreaking one on many levels. Not only is Miss Sinister the first character to be nominated and win after the first month of her original appearance but she is also the first character to win or be nominated who was originally a different gender! When Mystique's true intentions were revealed during 2008's hit crossover, Messiah Complex, and Mr. Sinister was found lying dead at the feet of Mystique everyone knew it wasn't the last we'd see or hear of Nathaniel Essex. As it turned out, adjectiveless X-Men's trasition into X-Men: Legacy would pit Professor Charles Xavier against Mr. Sinister's very own D.N.A. which he had implanted into Sebastian Shaw, Cain Marko, and Professor Xavier himself. Lucky for them, Gambit stepped in at just the right time and with the help of Sebastian Shaw, Xavier was able to ward off the pieces of Mr. Sinister inside him. For a moment, we all thought that was the last we'd see of the great villain, Sinister, but his last trick up his sleeve was a gender bending clone of himself containing all the personality and genius but none of the memories. Miss Sinister is bound to create drama for the X-Men and her addition as the new Black Queen of the Hellfire Club immediately brings her to the forefront of villains the X-Men need to watch out for. We'll be watching out for her too. |

Considering the flagship team of X-Men were never supposed to know about post Messiah Complex X-Force, avid readers of the comic knew Warren Worthington III's presence on panel had to be leading up to something, but what happened was something we never would've guessed. The Purifiers, in an attempt to steal Apocalypse's technology from Warren, inadvertently brought back one of the X-Men's greatest foes, bad ass characters, and all around creepy guy, Archangel, or Death, as he was known to his creator, Apocalypse. Whether or not this revert back to Archangel is permanent or not, it threw all of us for a loop. We can't wait to see which side Archangel is on and who's butt he's going to kick first, X-Force or the Purifiers. |

If I ever met Chris Claremont, writer of Uncanny X-Men for a majority of it's history, one of the first questions I'd ask is if he had any of idea when he created the character, Gambit, that it would take on such a life of it's own. Remy LeBeau debuted in the early 90's to "break out" status unseen in X-Books since Wolverine joined the team in Giant Size Uncanny X-Men #1. Written on the whim of a writer, a mere flirtation between Gambit and Rogue produced a phenomenon that surpassed X-Men super couples; Cyclops and Jean Grey, and Havok and Polaris. The pairing of this slick talking Cajun with a southern runaway who would kill him if he laid a finger on her resonated with readers in a whole new explosive way. Polls on our own X-Men Fan Site have double the amount of votes for Gambit and Rogue's relationship then Cyclops and Jean's or even Cyclops and Emma Frost. Gambit is Mutant of Month because the existence of this character is what X-Men comics are all about; complex characters, complex histories, and deep tragic flaws that illuminate the motivations for the character's voice. |

I can almost, ALMOST forgive Joss Whedon and his creative team for effectively lying to us every month and saying Astonishing X-Men was hitting stands generally three-five months before it ever did. It's unfortunate one of the best comics ever written was subject to having the story broken up so many times in our heads. Despite this book's doomy punctuality, what am I am now going to do is put my foot in my mouth. Giant Size Astonishing X-Men #1 was a riveting double issue featuring the cream de la crop of Marvel Superheroes. The Fantastic Four and some of the Avengers made cameos as one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the X-Men's history occured, that of Kitty Pryde. What makes this death so special, is the journey this character underwent throughout her run on the X-Men. She first appeared as a new mutant, an everyman, a thirteen year kid just trying to get by and understand herself in Chicago. Luckily for us, she was swept into the biggest story line in X-Men history, The Dark Phoenix saga. Kitty's evolution from a thirteen year old girl to one of the strongest and most put together female characters of the X-Men Multiverse makes her more than worthy to be Mutant of the Month. We say good-bye to her tearfully as she sacrifices herself to save earth and the human race from the threats of the Breakworld. We'll miss you Kitty. May you rise again. |

You
demanded it. Colossus has been voted Mutant of the Month for May 2008
and he won by an overwhelming margin. When he first arrived in Russia
in the pages of Uncanny X-Men we discovered the fate of Kitty Pryde
and, collectively, our hearts broke. Our saving grace was that Joss
Whedon's resurrection of Piotr Rasputin would bring the character into
the new millenium in a way he wasn't included in the X-Men during the
90's. Colossus has been through so much, even we as readers may have
forgotten he lost his entire family and the woman he loves because he
is such a strong character and like Nightcrawler, despite all the
heartache, still manages to be a human being of innocence, integrity,
and pride. It's probably safe to say when Colossus sacrificed himself
in order to cure the legacy virus and dissappeared for a while, that it
was probably his first and last time off the front burner of the X-Men.

It wasn't too long ago when it looked like all was lost for Mystique. At the end of "Messiah Complex" when Rogue grabbed Mystique's mouth after discovering she intended to sacifice a baby's life in order to heal her, there was little possibility of Raven Darkholme surviving the experience. However, Rogue realized at the moment of absorbtion the baby's touch healed her of the billions of personalities stored within her and she let go of Mystique before completely wiping her memory out. We all thought that would be the last we'd see of Mystique for a while but one month later she popped up on the panels of Wolverine hiding behind the townspeople of Afghanistan from Wolverine after he was tapped to kill her once and for all by Cyclops. Looks like this may finally be her swan song. |

I have to admit when I first heard there was going to be a major cross over event featuring all the X-Titles that was called "Messiah Complex," I naturally assumed, like most people, that the person with the messiah complex was one of three people; Sinister, Apocalypse or Magneto. He was the first villian of the X-Men and their most famous foe and it looks like it's taken Professor X to get a bullet in the head for Magneto to make his triumphant return. We look forward to all the drama to come. |

Right when it seemed that Professor X had became an almost undeemable character the writer's of the X-Books did the one thing that would redeem him in one foul swoop. They killed him. Well, sort of...
The Prof is back in X-Men Legacy building his mind back from the brink of death one lego at a time. Suddenly, after sending a second team of X-Men to their deaths and using his powers to cover up any memories of it, creating a slave being of artificial intelligence and oppressing it, and becoming half of one of the most bad ass villians Marvel Comics has ever seen, the Prof is looking like a pretty good guy again. Memories of a man who took in and great care of all these people and yet kept striving for a dream of a better world return to us and his fellow X-Men finally putting Xavier on the front burner and converting an X-Title into his own. Good luck Professor. |

Apparently Telekinesis wasn't the only thing Nathan Dayspring Summers inherited from his mother Madelyn Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey. Cable just added self resurrection to his list of growing powers. Just when it seemed he'd worn out his welcome, the writers of Messiah Complex found a brilliant way to breathe new life into this character . They put him right in between the various factions vying over the first mutant birth since decimation. So far, in his first month back, he battled Bishop, two-timed the X-Men by aligning himself with Professor Xavier, managed to grab a baby from a cess pool of fighting Marauders and Purifiers, and still had a tearful moment with his father, Cyclops, that abruptly lead to the near Death of Professor X. Wow! What a re-entrance! Just when you thought Cable was a 90's superhero, he dies and comes back to pave the way for the heroes of the 21st Century. |

It's been a long time since Sally Blevins has been hot. Since about the time she lost the love of her life, Rusy Collins, who had the ability to manipulate fire, actually. Time, however, has been kind to her moving her to a pivotal role in pre-Messiah Complex Uncanny X-Men where she pulled a "Nina Myers" ala FOX's 24 on the Morlocks when she revealed herself to be an undercover agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. If that wasn't a comeback enough Sally turned on them to show the copy of Destiny's Diaries she and the X-Men risked their lives to get a hold of to Magneto, being the first to tell him that in the future he too would play a pivotal role and that he would do so as homo superior. |
